September 8th, 1967 Agriculture, Special Crops Station sun flower protected from birds by fish net grain sheathes covered with jute sack, not for the birds, hungry birds can sit and look but they can’t touch the dandy crop of sunflowers at the Special Crops Station at Portage. A nylon fishnet has been spread over and around the crop and only the tiny birds can get in for a meal, the station has several varieties under experiment and wants to keep all the seed for future growing, Tom Chesney, officer in charge, came up with the fishnet idea and its working wonders, it’s harvest time at the station and the second photo shows grain in one of the test plots carefully cut, covered and stoked for full ripening without the loss of precious seed, hundreds of varieties were grown at the station this year including wheat in the International World Series, the only plot in Manitoba to be entered in this special event. Careful records are kept of planting growth and harvest results on the Portage station
