La Verandrye [La Verendrye]

La Verandrye [La Verendrye] geometry project

Geometry project

Students in room 8B at La Verendrye School recently completed construction of this intricate geodesic dome as a geometry project. The dome was constructed from 300 feet of half inch dowels, garden hose, and 70 bolts. Material was donated by three local lumber yards. In the dome’s construction there are 10 hexagons, and five pentagons, for a total of 105 isosceles triangles. John Boehm, Ron Kopen, and Doug Nash built the dome under the supervision of their teacher, John Friesen. As the primary grade children enjoy being inside the dome, it will be used in the future as a listening centre where the children practice reading with the aid of tape recordings.
